This is the same guy who a few years ago stated he had created the world's largest black pearls in the Andamans. Anyone remember this article? This same dude claims to have cultured a 22 mm black pearl with an 8 mm nucleus. Oh yeah, and he claimed it was worth $30,000. He also claimed to have a 90%+ rate of nucleus retention and pearl production in his experiments.
Well, let me be the first to call bullshit. I do not believe this guy for an instant. I read the black pearl article a couple years ago but never saw a shred of proof. Even reading this article it is clear that the author knows so little about pearl production. He claims that 6 mm pearls take three years to grow in Japan and he cannot spell mantle - something he is supposedly working with to create his amazing pearls.
Are they growing weed in India now? Mushrooms? Something with hallucinogenic properties? This guy has more stories than Dr. Seuss.

I also have come across the news of Dr. Ajai Kumar Sonkar, hwn I searched I got his site www.pealindia.org, and by this site I reached to him and Found he has done a great job, may be some where reporting about him is not fully currect because it is reported by non technical people. if one visit his site there is a huge details about him as well as his activity. He has produced 22 mm size of nuclei which is largest in the world, that I had seen several years back in an Amrerican journal article written by Dr. C. Richard Fassler. the clip of the article is also available at Dr. Sonkar's site. there Dr. Richard fassler has mentioned that this Indian nucleus can produce pearl worth US$ 30000/-
I have learn about Dr. Sonkar that he is an independent researcher and working silently since past several years with remarkable results. we should know him and aapreciate his great efforts. which he has done without any support. we should not mistake him by the reports by news makers, Dr. Ajai Kumar Sonkar is not from Delhi he is working at a very remote place in Andaman Islands. and it is expensive to reach him that is why news about him goes some times without talking to him. ofcourse I have seen in reporting some spell mistake because it is reported by non technical people.
Hope this helps
Gina
Interesting.
I found the Web site you mentioned. I think the correct URL is pearlindia.in.
So there never was "the world's largest black pearl, worth $30k" or a 42 mm "whole" pearl in the shape of Lord Ganesh. A blister is definitely a different story! You aren't kidding. That is some bad reporting!
So a 22 mm NUCLEUS, not a 22 mm pearl. That is quite a difference.
One question about the nucleus. What sort of shell does a monster like that go into? It is much too big for Pinctada margaritifer or Pinctada maxima. What sort of mollusk?
The photo's of the Icon Pearls are taken off our website americanbiogem.com
We have sent him tools and technology in the past, we are not happy that he would use our trade name or photo's without our permission.
We culture pearls in Tahiti and developed the technology that we use to grow pearls in any shape. iconpearls.com is a direct access to our site, We will be showing this new product at the up coming shows and I can assure you they are well below 30K 35$ to 175$ We have in excess of 500 designs and are producing 25,000 units per month.

Icon pearl or image pearl is not new, centuries before, Chinese used to produce Buddha images in the freshwater mussels, and these were sold in their temples, if any body claims that he has developed the technique to produce icon pearl or image pearl is not correct...
I got opportunity to see the research facilities of Dr. Sonkar of India, he is really doing splendid work, Dr. Sonkar had shown me some image pearls of Lord Sai and Balaji (Indian Gods) those he had produced in freshwater mussels in 1993, he told me that producing such pearl has no significant or intricate technique which requires any special tool, only thing an image is required to glue between the shell and the mantle, oyster/mussel covers such images with pearly component then these images are cut to detach from the shell. its quite funny if anyone says he has sent tools and technique to any pearl producer for image pearl...
I reached Sonkar about the recent news of Ganesha pearl in wing oyster, he told me that this is not important that a ganesha pearl is produced but he has experimented to activate the mantle for the faster secretion of pearl sac, that has resulted a 2 mm thick layers on 42 mm size of image in the shape of Ganesha within 7 months only.
I am agreed with the views of Gina, Ajai Sonkar has done remarkable researches and his scientific ability have been acknowledged by many esteemed dignities, forums and education institutions in the world.
I have visited his site www.pearlindia.com and found the commendations of several renown people in the videos, everyone seems to be astonished with his independent research without any outside help...
and asa far as the photos of the icon pearls above professor has used seems it is for the reference only... to share the information not for a commercial gain... i think that is not objectionable at all...
