Sad news today on the Tahitian pearl industry front. GIE Perles de Tahiti will cease to exist on September 30th.What does this mean for the industry? Does this mean the tax-lift will become permanent? Does this mean dealers and producers are now on their own, left to promote Tahitian pearls as independents without the guidance of of the industry's promotional arm?
This is sad, sad news for the once great Tahitian pearl industry.
Why no link to the article today? Because this news has not been released yet. In fact, most in Tahiti do not yet know.

Very sad...
It means their website will be gone too and I could no longer watch those beautiful pearling videos they have.
I'm so sad.... Look oohh...
:-(
I'm so sad...
How could they do such a do?
How could they say such a say?
How could they?
I know Robert Wan personally, and "yes" this is a tragic event. He has been a titan in this industry.
Maybe it's not the worst decision. It is widely believed in Tahiti and the work GIE did was not enough to cover the amount of money the industry poured into it. GIE was a marketing and promotion arm of the industry, but was headed by a biologist with no experience in marketing.
Tahiti needs to pick up the pieces, start again, and build a new GIE with a stronger focus and message.
He has been a titan in this industry
And still is.
JS is correct, but we should not diminish or minimize the work of Robert. It would be a shame for all GIE's good work to fall by the wayside.
Tahitian cultured pearls has once been extremely expensive. Thanks to Robert Wan GIE Perles de Tahiti aggresive marketing as what they said.
I think Robert Wan is not the only one who markets his goods. He can just easily afford to hire the best advertising agency and I think they have been succesful only that people's taste in pearls changes and we are now into golden and white pearls. The demand for blacks decreases and so is the price.
Well to be very precised the GIE has stoped his comunication activities on the 1st october 2008
It is still existing till the 1st of January
There is a very small hope to see it continue but everyone in Polynesia is very pessimistic as the GIE itself
Yes it is sad...
