Damn it! Where is the pearl news? It seems the industry has nearly gone silent over the last few months. There is talk, but there is always talk. Even the rags are mostly quiet. Today, I received my long-awaited issue of Jewellery News Asia. There is always something interesting there. Rarely is it the full story, but always something to go on. Hell, they have an entire section of the pub dedicated to pearls. But the entire bloody thing in the new issue was a report on The World Pearl Forum in Dubai. It’s May for Christ’s sake. That’s old news!On the rumor front, the same whisperings about Autore are making their way around the industry. “Hey, did you hear Autore closed this office and that office?” Yep! Heard it! It doesn’t sound like they’re bunging on an act.
I know publishing that rumor a couple months backed chapped a few hides, but come on folks! It is not a rumor that a lot of producers whose production was historically sold by Autore are not renewing contracts. Atlas had a presence at the Hong Kong show and Arafura is actively seeking direct-sale relationships now. It would seem they may be getting ready to go belly up at any tic of the clock.
…and now here comes the hate mail.
One interesting tidbit came from CIBJO recently. Apparently there is new treatment being applied to akoya. Those Japanese sure are resourceful. This time they are injecting metal fluids directly into the pearl’s sac during growth. I guess they cannot wait to color-treat those buggers. CIBJO is now calling them “colour induced pearls.”

Man o man what do the Nipps think they are doing . Injecting metal fluids into the gonad , wasn't that the specialty of unit 71 during the war in china!!! Bleaching , dying , colouring , cooking , baking , freezing , irradiating, where does it end . Give me south sea pearls big, silky lustrous and beautiful - Bring it on !!!
That is just soooo progressively smart of the Japanese akoya meisters that yin turns into yang and it actually becomes some backward stupid instead. The resulting product should be labelled as "ECO-PEARLS!", haha, just kidding, it should really be "artificial stupid shit colour induced pseudo pearls." Here's something for a new slogan too, "while getting your loved one a strand of these will hurt your wallet, that's nothing compared to where the oyster is hurting"
Oh hell, how about, "AKOYA, THE ANTI-PEARL."
It is very likely they will employ a form of porphyrin, a protein that binds a metal into it. The color of black pearls and Cortez Pearls is due -partially- to the natural presence of these proteins in the nacre of Pinctada margaritifera and Pteria sterna.
Why don't the Japanese admit that their industry is dead??? They polluted their waters, they genetically polluted their oysters and they just over-produced their pearls (at the expense of quality).
My advice? Make a new cartoon based on a rogue Japanese pearl farmer seeking to avenge his former teacher Mikimoto...
Dear Pearl Professor,
This article and the comments that followed are just another bombardment of sensational low-quality hate mails directed against the Japanese. Below the belt, and out of context! One gets the impression that the entire Japanese akoya industry is now engaged in using this method, which is totally wrong! Reminds me of a single lunatic experimenting in his little garage to run his Toyota car with peanut butter, and then the entire world reporting that all Toyota cars are now running on peanut butter! This is just crazy! Stop publishing such low-quality, sensational and defaming nonsense. Professor, it's about time you go back to credible reporting!
Regards,
Japandy
Certainly not the entire industry, even without Chinese-style fragmentation it would be absurd. But one or two bad apples...then again, who says it is bad. Chocolate pearls are defiled Tahitians, but they are accepted and they are hot. Fireballs are bead-desecrated freshwater pearls, but they are the most expensive of all cultured freshwater.
So which is defaming nonsense? An early advertisement of the next synthetic breakthrough? Some should be celebrating!
Totally agree with you on the past several issues of Jewellery News Asia rehashing the dismal World Pearl Forum. They must be cutting back on their once-upon-a-time fine reportage, perhaps having fired most everyone like JCK magazine has done. The Dubai confab folks did nothing to establish themselves as a new or exciting entity in the pearl business. Suggest everyone stop beating their gums about this monumental failure, and cease and desist trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Dubai will never become an important pearl destination. Fogettaboutit. It's a done deal. Water under the bridge. Not even Paspaley, Wan or Jewelmer's infusion of goods on tender could untarnish this event.

Comment by "Anonymous" (Perlemeister) about JNA magazine well observed! Spot on! Grats! JNA tanking, goodness gracious! Poor reporting, no more ads, skinny like Twiggy, no meat on the bone, superficial nonsense article by Mr. Leung about global SSP market / production, skimpy reporting, gee, shall we call it coitus interruptus?.. or abortion! I rather stick to "Pearl World"!
