Despite the global pearling slump, declining South Sea pearl harvests and the scarcity of consumers willing to spend on true luxuries, Kailis has finished one of the finest strands of South Sea pearls ever created. The Versatility Strand Necklace is purported to have taken five years of pearl gathering, from 25 separate harvests, from five different farms. Whilst no size details are disclosed on PerthNow.com.au, the 58 pearls wrapped twice appear to range 15 mm and likely above.
“When you’re working with something so special you really want to make it
just right,” says Henderson.
Later, when the piece has been completed, he describes his reaction on
picking it up for the first time: “It was one of those eureka moments. It
brought a tear to my eye, because you don’t see such things very often.”
Expressions of interest for the necklace have already been received in
the region of $800,000, but it could go for much higher than that. “Because of
the rarity of these pearls, the market will ultimately dictate the price,” says
Kailis’ general manager Sonia Mackay-Coghill.
Whilst a strand like this is not the most expensive, flamboyant strand created with Australian pearls, it is a promising sign that confidence is slowly returning to our beleaguered industry.

Wilmas!
You're not serious prof are you? Five years of selective pearl gathering by Paspaley for a luxury product only afforded by the super rich and you equate that with consumer confidence slowly returning. Your intellect must be lost in space. In case you haven't noticed, the economy is still shit fairly everywhere around the globe and the average person no longer has disposable income for frivolities like strands of pearls, even the run of the mill kind. The rich have always had, and always will have, the means for overpriced or high priced luxuries. What that has to do with consumer confidence is beyond me.
WTF is Wilmas is that Xmas's sister
Or Marge? I was beginning to think the prof had gone off the radar. Busy with tango lessons maybe?
Have you ever heard of Wilma Flintstone of the animated series "The Flintstone"? http://www.pearl-professor.com/2008/08/chunky-pearls-again.html
Xmas is Wilmas' sister and Zeide Erskine is their mother.
To help the Pearl Professor's readers get up to date on their authentic pearl terminology:

It needs to be seen for what it is . A masterpiece.
Pearls are wonders of nature and should be appreciated by everyone. Golden pearls by Jewelmer are luxury at its finest. You might want to check this out www.jewelmer.com
Anon- this forum isn't for you to spam or promote another asshole's jewelry. we are already trying to sell our own stuff and stay on top of industry news. Moderation in the comments??
Apart from that, I would mostly agree with the WTF comment above: the super rich never stopped spending just because the rest of the world economy got flushed down the toilet like yesterday's corn... indeed, I suspect that the whole thing was engineered to go down exactly like it did.
That said, it is a gorgeous necklace, certainly worthy of attention and maybe a little bit of awe from industry insiders that know how much time, effort and labor went into the finished piece. Bravo, Kailis! It'll sit in the store for a year, but it'll look good doing it! ;)

A presumption that Paspaley has been influential on pearling policy in Western Australia.
Well I never...............not.
Why no review of that despicable book, Tears of Mermaids? Oh, I get it, You are the actual author and this column is to give you gravitas in the industry- I notice all those references to SSP's match the contacts in your disgusting tome. Yeah and now that your book is out, you dropped the column.
Why do I say disgusting? Because you believed the Rana of Fresno.....
Haven't finished it yet. Probably won't review.
A lot of people believed the Rana of Fatness, they just don't want to admit it even to this day. She had the whole pearl-guide forum snowed except for the few people who got her booted off. Steve Bloom is going to have to live the rest of his life with the stigma of being one of the poor saps that fell for her fat fairy bull dust.
I Don't think the prof is really Steve Bloom...he'd be writing more articles if he was, albeit inaccurate ones.
didn't the Rana tell some people her mother is an Inuit from Greenland who eneded up in Germany. Why isn't that in steven blooms book.
I can tell you with absolute unimpeachable certainty that Steven Bloom, author of "Tears of Mermaids," which is every pearl purveyor's and pearl aficionado's most despised book, is not the Pearl Professor. However, that's not all that bad a guess.
Has anyone consulted the oracle of pealing about the above - Sir Arther Falpjack - He is to pearling what Stephen Hawking is to physics
WhatTF is the oracle of pealing? Is that where one consults Quasimodo in a bell tower? WhoTF is Arther Falpjack? Is he, like, the keyboard dyslexic version of Arthur Flapjack? WhoTF is to pearling what Stephen Hawking is to physics again? Do you really mean Sir Arther Falpjack better known as Sir Arthur Flapjack better known as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle who was coined so because of his belief in fairies(the imaginary kind)? WhatTF does Sir Arthur Conan Doyle have to do with pearls or oracles of pealing?
last time I heard of Sir Arthur he was driving a taxi in Broome
No, Buck darling, you are thinking of Nick Paspaley, not Sir Arthur.
Please refrain from attributing nonBucks to Buck.
Sorry Buck darling, I meant bigbag, if that will make you any happier.
